A LETTER FROM DOROTHY

I fell in love with Greenville thirty-four years ago when as a young engineer I was recruited here by CRS Sirrine. The job itself was a terrific opportunity but it was the positive energy of a city with big ambitions and strong values that sealed the deal and inspired my husband Steve and me to make Greenville our new home.

As we hoped, our chances to thrive have mirrored those of Greenville. We live in the same house we bought when we first arrived but since then we have raised two children, become actively involved in our neighborhood and its schools, been nurtured by a vital church community, and made every effort to pay forward all the good fortune that has come our way.

In the last thirty years, I have transitioned from a successful career as an engineer to that of an entrepreneur with a commitment to providing strong academic consulting services to Greenville’s students. This shift in focus allowed me to to become more involved in PTA leadership, to build strong relationships with the doers of our community, and to volunteer as a community advocate.

For the last four years I applied what I had learned as an involved citizen and served as your at-large city council person. And like all of you who experienced the last four years with me, much of what I dealt with was not expected. But it was all valuable. And though the learning curve was steep and the challenges were great, I am even more proud now of the city of Greenville than I was before. We weathered Covid by relying on our strength as a community. We learned new ways to keep in touch and to support one another. We managed to keep our city’s growth on a steady trajectory when much of the world was standing still or losing ground. And on most fronts we came out ahead.

However, I think I am most proud of the fact that we did not let the big and serious issue of Covid distract us from the values that mattered to us pre-Covid. Our community continued to focus on our need for affordable housing, the priority of keeping green spaces, the pressure of defining responsible growth. We prioritized making our city safer and improving our infrastructure. And that work continues.

Which is why I am here today asking for your endorsement of a second term. I have compiled a city report card for you to assess, and I am proud of our progress.

My passion for the projects in the pipeline and on the horizon is real. Like any seasoned employee, I believe my value has increased as my experience has grown. I hope I have demonstrated that I am committed and dedicated. That I do my homework, study the issues, ask the detailed questions, and listen to you.

For all the above reasons, I respectfully ask for your vote on November 7, 2023.
